If your fishing from the bank or in a boat you can get awesome catches fishing with planer bobbers,
I fish mostly for catfish but have used planer bobbers to catch bass,crappie and walleye too. I will also do some striper fishing at the lakes here in North Carolina . The next world record is swimming in the huge lakes here and the planer bobbers will give me the edge to hook and land that monster.
Why you ask? Easy, look at it this way-fish are afraid of noise and boats passing over head-they tend to swim out and around till they are clear of the noise or boats path. There waits the baited planer bobber out back and off to the side where fish feed with no fear-rarely do big fish slam the top of the water near the boat or near the bank were you are fishing-Its always out a little past where you are fishing -right?
Thats where the planer bobber comes in -It will place your bait right where it needs to be -Its like jug fishing (the most deadly form of fishing that there is ) only planer bobbers are better and way more fun . Live bait works best but good catches are made with fresh cut bait minnows and worms too.
I fished lake tillery a week ago and caught the biggest fish of my life with planer bobbers -I also tested them againts bottom fishing rigs for catfish in the river just below the dam- they caught 5 times as many fish as my poles carolina rigged on the bottom.
Fish will find you bait better and faster if its not laying on the bottom and is moving with the current or drifted or slow trolled- I have been fishing for over 40 years and this is the best way to present live or dead bait I have ever seen or tried- Its way more fun to-
Drifting or slow trolling will put lots of fish in the boat-set the bait at the depth the fish are active and use the wind or your trolling motor to power your boat along at slow speeds of less than 2.5 miles per hour-with 1 mile per hour to .5 miles a hour being the best speeds.set the rod in a rod holder or hold on -it wont take long till a fish slams the bait as it passes them by. Anchor in river current and send the planer bobber out to do its duty-bait up and feed out line till you get to the depth you want the bait to ride and set the cool tube into the planer to hold it at the desired depth and feed line out till it gets back away from the boat and lock your bail -
Watch as the planer does its thing its so cool -It will start to plane out to the side that you picked it to go( they go left or right just by pushing the release tube in the right or left side its that easy no need to buy a left side or a right side planer they all work both sides wow.) The planer can now go way back and out to the sides -It can go out to the main channel to the left or to the right it can go up near the bank or near logs of overhanging trees-
There is no way you could fish like this with out a side planer none. Now you can let it sit there till it gets slammed or let out line and drift it back and forth through the area covering lots of water and never having to recast its so cool .

A very Good Spot for Trolling planer bobbers is Hoover Reservoir, Columbus Ohio. Mini planer boards work great and catch bass, largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, and catfish. Whats great about Hoover Reservoir is its a 10 h.p. motor limit! Smooth trolling for use of side planer boards like the glow top lucky 7-11 planer bobber. Night time fishing is even better on Hoover Reservoir. The Glow top planer bobber will mark where your line is and if you have a fish on. Drift fishing or slow trolling at night will yield large fish at Hoover.
The North end of Hoover has big bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish on the flats / shallows and crappie. Trolling thru this area with short leader ( 3 feet ) and live bait or cut bait as well as a spoon lure will catch bass, crappie and catfish.
